A Sample 21-Day Tour Itinerary
The following itinerary is an example that is based on a three-week (21 day) study tour in Thailand. Its length and focus can be customized to fit the needs of university faculty members, students, and specific course objectives.
Day 1: Bangkok
Attend an orientation briefing on safety, health and emergency planning, and then explore the streets of Bangkok. Attend a welcome dinner.
Day 2: Bangkok
Attend a Thai language class and then listen to a lecture on Thai culture, history and society from a university professor. Attend a presentation on the cuisine of Central Thailand. Participate in a fun cooking-class competition and dinner in the evening.
Day 3: Bangkok
Visit Bangkok’s key historical sites while learning about the culture and history of Thailand. Visit a classical Asian art collection at a local museum. Meet with local social studies university students in evening.
Day 4: Bangkok
Visit a community that practices three faiths: Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. Then visit an NGO working in the Bangkok slums to learn about some of the challenges of Bangkok’s urban poor.
Day 6: Bangkok-Chiang Mai
Fly from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Hear a history lecture on the Lanna Kingdom and visit local historic sites. Attend a presentation on the cuisine of Northern Thailand. Participate in a fun cooking-class and dinner in the evening.
Day 7: Chiang Mai
Listen to a lecture on the Buddhist faith and attend a Buddhist meditation class. Explore the area at leisure in the afternoon
Day 8: Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai
Drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. Visit an elephant camp that rehabilitates elephants.
Days 9-10: Chiang Rai
Attend a briefing on Thailand’s hill tribes, then trek to a hill-tribe village to spend the night with local families as part of a project run by a local NGO.
Day 11: Chiang Rai
Walk across the border bridge into Tachileik, Myanmar, to shop and visit some local temples. Then visit the Hall of Opium Museum. Make a quick boat trip across the Mekong River to visit the special trade zone of Laos.
Day 12: Chiang Rai-Phuket
Fly from Chiang Rai to Phuket in Southern Thailand. Attend a presentation on the cuisine of Southern Thailand. Participate in a fun cooking-class and dinner in the evening.
Days 13-14: Phuket
Spend these free days exploring the area; spend time at the beach etc.
Day 15: Phuket
Visit Old Phuket Town Historic District. Enjoy a lunch of Southern Thai cuisine. Visit an Islamic temple.
Day 16: Phuket
Visit an NGO that works with the Burmese Moken to learn about the plight of migrant workers in Thailand. Visit a mining museum to learn about the history of Phuket.
Day 17: Phuket
Visit to a rubber plantation to learn about the Phuket rubber business. Spend the evening exploring the city.
Day 18: Bangkok
Fly from Phuket to Bangkok. Spend the evening in a casual peer networking event with students from a local university.
Day 19: Bangkok
Spend the day at leisure exploring other historic and cultural sites such as Jim Thompson’s house, a Hindu temple and a Buddhist wat.
Day 20: Bangkok
Final debrief and farewell dinner.
Day 21: Bangkok-Return Home
Check-out of hotel; catch flights home, or remain in the region to join another tour, internship, or for personal travel.
