Day 1 Arrival/Orientation
After arrival in Hanoi, your group will meet for a short orientation about Vietnam, learn some helpful language tips and gain an overview of the upcoming activities of the trip.
Day 2 Welcome to the Community
Drive north from Hanoi through the countryside to the project site in Lang Son. Meet the community members and overnight at a homestay in a traditional bamboo stilt house of an ethnic minority family.
Day 3-5 Daily Service Activities
The village school is three small classrooms constructed of bamboo with a mud floor. The students can significantly improve the school by helping make mud bricks and a concrete floor to keep the school from flooding when it rains.
On breaks from the building project, the students can interact with the school children, teach them English and play learning games. In the evening there is time to learn traditional dancing.
Students will also have the opportunity to assist their homestay families with daily chores such as tending the rice paddies, harvesting vegetables, collecting firewood, fishing and cooking meals (depending on the season).
Day 6 Trekking Adventure
Make a trek to Quynh Son and Bac Son villages to enjoy the grandeur of the mountainous landscape, which combined with the paddy fields in the valleys, create stunning photo opportunities. Students can learn more about local people, their way of life and valued traditions.
Day 7 Water Puppet Show
Take a short trek to Na Lay summit for a picnic lunch and exploring more village life. Afterwards, transfer back to Hanoi for the colorful and unique “Water Puppet Show” and souvenir shopping.
Note: This trekking activity can be replaced by an alternate excursion to Ha Long Bay where student volunteers can help collect floating refuse while kayaking.
Day 8 Hanoi Sightseeing
Each student can sit back and enjoy a seat on his or her own Vietnamese cyclo (Pedi cab) for a morning tour of Hanoi’s historic Old District before transfer to the airport.
